Rapid and far reaching changes in healthcare and in the larger environment have conspired to place enormous pressures on medical groups. The bar is being raised year by year so that groups must achieve higher levels of performance in more areas – such as operations, medical quality, financial performance, recruiting - in order to thrive. Those medical groups that do not excel suffer increasing penalties and risk.
As in many other sectors of the economy, there is a growing reward for medical groups that become a high performing organization. The prior generation of “loosely confederated” medical groups cannot achieve top performance.
